That’s Entertainment

Here’s a small list of great comics I read, have read, and highly recommend.

1. ALL-STAR SUPERMAN
Best comic being produced right now. If you think Superman is a tired old concept, I suggest you read this.

2. WARREN ELLIS SCARS
Best thing Warren has every written. It’s a movie done in pen and ink. It’s not the most fun of subject matter, but it’s done in a realistic and heart-wrenching manner. I can already see this as a big budget movie. The art chores fall on Jacen Burrows and he’s a rockstar with the material. Jacen’s one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet, but he certainly knows how to draw gory details. Highly recommended.

3. BOYS VOL 1
I miss the early issues of Authority where all kinds of crazy shit was going down. This brings it all back dressed up in a kick-ass story with characters I want to know more about. I have the first six issues and the trade. I might unload the first six issues if someone wants them bad enough.

4. FABLES VOL 9 SONS OF EMPIRE
Fantastic storytelling. Every story in here is a gem. I can’t recommend this series enough. This is by far one of the best trade paperbacks to get newbies interested in comics. Especially girls.

5. CASANOVA VOL 1 LUXURIA
Damn you Matt Fraction. I wanted to write a story about a superspy family jumping realities and having sex with gorgeous space girls falling from the sky. Fine, I’ll read your marvelous tales instead. Grumble.

6. FELL VOL 1 FERAL CITY
I love how Ellis takes a real world story and weaves it into the world of Fell. Of course, I wouldn’t know that by reading the trade. Just like Boys and Casanova, I own the individual issues as well. I really need to stop doing that. This is gritty storytelling at its best.

7. CRIMINAL VOL 2 LAWLESS
8. CRIMINAL VOL 1 COWARD
Seriously, just go buy these and read them. If you like film noir, crime caper movies and books, then these two trades are right up you alley. This is compelling storytelling that sucks you in after reading the first two pages. I started volume two in my car after picking it up at the store and had to mentally stop reading because I had to go back to work. These things grab you and never let you go.

9. LEADING MAN VOL 1
Gee, what if Tom Cruise really was a spy. Neat premise, some of the best artwork on the planet and a decent story. I want more.

10. BLACK SUMMER
The one book I look forward to reading each month. I’ll be very sad when it comes to an end.
