No Bone Movies

I could give a shit about the Oscars. Mostly it’s because I usually never see the nominated movies. I should see these movies and I might see them on DVD sometime, but except for that one season a few years back where I saw all the Best Picture nominees, I just don’t see them. My bad.

Also, there are a lot of Oscars given out that I don’t give a shit about. There are only nine categories anybody cares about: Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Animated Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay. The rest is chaffe. I’m not saying Best Cinematography isn’t important, because it is. However, I don’t really care and neither do most people who go to the movies. Feel free to disagree and please present your choice for a tenth category I should give a shit about because leaving it at nine doesn’t seem right. (Maybe Best Original Song… I dunno.)

I hope the strike is settled before the Oscars. From the little I’ve read, it seems that an agreement might be forthcoming, but what do I know I’m not a member of the guild.

All in all, I am terribly unqualified to comment on this year’s crop of movies and performances, but it’s my website and I’ll rant if I want to. My opinion is neither informed nor should it be used for any purpose other than entertainment. The nominees and my comments are as follows:

BEST PICTURE
ATONEMENT
NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN
MICHAEL CLAYTON
THERE WILL BE BLOOD
JUNO

I have seen none of these movies. Although this year I want to see all of these movies and that isn’t always the case. My gut says No Country For Old Men will win.

BEST ACTOR
Johnny Depp – SWEENEY TODD
Tommy Lee Jones – IN THE VALLEY OF ELAH
Daniel Day Lewis – THERE WILL BE BLOOD
George Clooney – MICHAEL CLAYTON
Viggo Mortensen – EASTERN PROMISES

More movies and performances I have not seen. My guess is Daniel Day Lewis will win.

BEST ACTRESS
Cate Blanchett – ELIZABETH: THE GOLDEN AGE
Laura Linney – THE SAVAGES
Marion Cotillard – LA VIE EN ROSE
Ellen Page – JUNO
Julie Christie – AWAY FROM HER

From what I’ve heard, the girl from Juno is really good.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Javier Bardem – NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN
Tom Wilkinson – MICHAEL CLAYTON
Hal Holbrook – INTO THE WILD
Casey Affleck – THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD
Philip Seymour Hoffman – CHARLIE WILSON’S WAR

I really hope Casey Affleck wins that way Ben and Casey both have Oscars. And you do not. It might also boost Gone Baby Gone (which I haven’t seen, but I really need to…). P.S. Hoffman is always great though.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Amy Ryan – GONE BABY GONE
Cate Blanchett – I’M NOT THERE
Runy Dee – AMERICAN GANGSTER
Saoirse Ronan – ATONEMENT
Tilda Swinton – MICHAEL CLAYTON

I really have no idea and I don’t really care.

BEST ANIMATED FILM
PERSEPOLIS
RATATOUILLE
SURF’S UP

Ratatouille has this in the bag. I’ve actually seen that movie…

BEST DIRECTOR
Joel and Ethan Coen – NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN
Tony Gilroy – MICHAEL CLAYTON
Jason Reitman – JUNO
Paul Thomas Anderson – THERE WILL BE BLOOD
Julian Schnabel – THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY

I think Paul Thomas Anderson will take it here. Although, the Coen Bros. have a very good shot.

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
Joel and Ethan Coen – NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN
Sarah Polley – AWAY FROM HER
Christopher Hampton – ATONEMENT
Ronald Harwood – THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY
Paul Thomas Anderson – THERE WILL BE BLOOD

Whomever wins best director also wins this category.

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
Diablo Cody – JUNO
Nancy Oliver – LARS AND THE REAL GIRL
Tony Gilroy – MICHAEL CLAYTON
Brad Bird – RATATOUILLE
Tamara Jenkins – THE SAVAGES

Please let Diablo Cody win. I so want to see her acceptance speech.
