Faithfully

As many of you know, I’m a huge Journey fan. You can read up on my unique Journey experience here. I grew up with Frontiers and Escape.

Lately, the band has gone through more changes at the lead singer spot than Van Halen. Journey actually has had several members come and go, but the lead singer spot since Steve Perry has been a revolving door with Kevin Chalfant of The Storm singing with members of the band, Steve Augeri formally taking over the role for a couple of albums, Jeff Scott Soto for a six month stint and now relative newcomer to the states, Arnel Pineda. There’s even a YouTube vid comparing the singers.

I liked Augeri and he seemed to fit the band well. I was disappointed in the songwriting on his albums and I think his time with the band was shadowed with having to win the hearts and ears of Journey fans. I love Jeff Scott Soto when he sings his stuff, but his problem is that he doesn’t sound like Perry (or Freddie Mercury, even though I like his cover medley).

So, now we have Pineda winning the job because he posted his band’s version of Faithfully on YouTube. I thought he had a great voice, but his band was terrible. I had trouble seeing him on stage with the guys.

Finally, Journey has taken the stage and we can see this new incarnation. I was shocked by how good it was. Considering it was his first concert with the band, I thought he performed better than anyone could have expected. I can’t wait to hear new music with his vocals and hopefully they will tour back in the States.
