Stupid is as Stupid Does

Hey! Guess what! It really is the economy, stupid! And when I say stupid I’m referring to Sarah Palin. Yes, I called her stupid. She is. Profoundly. It scares the shit out of me.

She scares me precisely because of her stupidity. Here is Exhibit A. Her position on creationism in public schools. She thinks they should be taught side by side.

“Teach both. You know, don’t be afraid of information. Healthy debate is so important and it’s so valuable in our schools. I am a proponent of teaching both. And you know, I say this too as the daughter of a science teacher. Growing up with being so privileged and blessed to be given a lot of information on, on both sides of the subject — creationism and evolution. It’s been a healthy foundation for me. But don’t be afraid of information and let kids debate both sides.”

The problem with this argument is that it puts creationism and evolution on equal footing and that is simply not true. Evolution is a scientific theory. By the way, when I say scientific theory that means it’s essentially a scientific fact. Yes, theories can change, which is the beauty of science. Creationism or the more politically correct term, Intelligent Design, can’t change with new information. While all scientific theory goes through rigorous testing and retesting, creationism says “poof” it happened this way because an old book that nobody knows who wrote it said so. That isn’t science. It’s fiction or if that’s too much for you, faith.

Finally, creationism is religion. The Constitution forbids laws respecting the establishment of a national religion. Public schools are overseen by local and state governments, which means no teaching of religious beliefs as the “be all end all” in public schools. Kansas tried throwing in some old time religion into their public schools. They were rebuffed by the founder of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti monster.

I’m not inclined to pray to HIS NOODLY APPENDAGE to stop the idiocy of Palin and, by default because the old coot picked her, McCain, but I will if it means I don’t have to worry that my vice president is making fun of community organizers, banning books and requiring rape victims pay for their rape kits.
