Dueling Alarm Clocks

This morning my alarm clock and the alarm on my cell phone were doing a weird version of dueling banjos. Remember, to my sleep-addled brain it was as if no time passed between SNOOZE buttons. It went something like this:

Alarm Clock: “I’ve been driving all night my hands wet –”
SNOOZE
Cell Alarm: Head-splitting electronic bell
SNOOZE
Alarm Clock: “Just like Buddy Holly –”
SNOOZE
Cell Alarm: Head-splitting electronic bell
SNOOZE
Alarm Clock: “I live my life like there’s no tomorrow –”
SNOOZE
Cell Alarm: Head-splitting electronic bell
SNOOZE
Alarm Clock: “I love rock and roll –”
SNOOZE
Cell Alarm: Head-splitting electronic bell
SNOOZE
Alarm Clock: “Extra 99.1 with –”
SNOOZE
Cell Alarm: Head-splitting electronic bell

As I said before, I’ve been sleeping poorly. So last night I tried something new. One of the newest apps on my my new iPod Touch (a recent Christmas gift, by the way) is called WhiteNoise. The free Lite version offers eight sounds such as Thunder, Fan and Crickets with volume and timer controls. I have a new iPod Touch with the small little speakers which are just loud enough to hear the sounds clearly. I picked the Beach and listened to soft waves crashing down on the sand as I drifted off to sleep. I remember wondering if I’ll wake up and have to go to the bathroom.

Exploring the iPod Touch, I found it also has an alarm with a wide variety of sounds such as a dog’s bark, motorcycle and sonar. I set the iPod Touch’s alarm to harp and cranked the volume. We’ll see how I wake up to my new alarm in the morning. I’ll either hear the harps and think I’ve died and gone to heaven or not hear them at all.

Luckily, my Alarm Clock will probably wake me up with the bass line from “Running with the Devil” – Bump Bump Bump Bump Bump Bump Bump Piano Tinkle.

SNOOZE.
