Why Facebook Can’t Fix Itself

Andrew Marantz, writing in The New Yorker, asks why Facebook can’t take care of its hate speech problem.

In theory, no one is allowed to post hate speech on Facebook. Yet many world leaders—Rodrigo Duterte, of the Philippines; Narendra Modi, of India; Donald Trump; and others—routinely spread hate speech and disinformation, on Facebook and elsewhere. The company could apply the same standards to demagogues as it does to everyone else, banning them from the platform when necessary, but this would be financially risky.

Um, no shit Sherlock. It’s all about the money.

While I’ve curated my Facebook to an inch of its life, I still am pretty tired of the platform and the utter lack of joy it provides. I’m probably going to leave soon.
