For the last three years, my family have taken a few days to enjoy each other’s company in the friendly confines of Door Country, Wisconsin. It’s an eight hour drive from Illinois to get to the “Cape Cod of the Midwest,” but it’s a trip everyone looks forward to making.
My parents have been visiting Door County for several years and regaled myself and my brother of tales of amazing food, beautiful scenery and quaint shopping in places exotically named Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, and Sister Bay. Finally, we decided to head north and take a full family vacation (my family of five, my brother’s family of three/later four, and my parents) to this far away land and experience it all together.
We’ve just completed year three of the Door County vacation and it may have been the most successful one yet.
Last year, we missed out on eating at the high end pizza place, Wild Tomato, in Fish Creek. This year, Dad made sure we had plenty of pizza to eat as soon as everyone finally made it to the Newport Resort.
The next morning, we visited one of our favorite breakfast destinations, the White Gull Inn, and it didn’t disappoint. Afterwards, we spent time shopping in Fish Creek. Last year, we found my wedding band in one of these fun shops so you never know what you might find.
Among the other highlights of the trip, a trolley ride through the upper pennisula where we took many photos of the nearby islands was scenic and interesting. We didn’t partake in the Ghost Tour, but we heard it was getting good reviews. Also, a few moments at the Ephraim public beach yielded much joy and sandy feet as we splashed around in Lake Michigan.
Of course, there were mini golf matches, pool and hot tub time, and a race or two around the Go Cart track. There were also a few moments to rest, relax and maybe catch a deer sunning near the resort.
Four days of fun. Looking forward to doing it all again next year.
